Shakira and Nelly Furtado are among those stars who will be performing at the third annual Latin Grammys, to be held later on this month.

Latin musicians Juanes, one of the big winners at last year's ceremony, and Marc Anthony are also scheduled to appear at the event, which takes place in Hollywood on 17 September.

Singer-songwriter Shakira won two Latin Grammys - best female pop vocal performance and best female rock vocal performance - at the first Latin Grammys in 2000.

The singer, who recently hit the UK charts with Whenever, Wherever, also won the Latin Pop Album award at the 43rd annual Grammy Awards in February this year.

Nelly Furtado will perform with Latin singer Juanes

Grammy-winning singer Furtado will perform with Latin star Juanes, who is nominated for song of the year, best rock song and best music video for the single A Dios Le Pido.

The show will be hosted by singer Gloria Estefan and actor Jimmy Smits.

Actress Daisy Fuentes, singer Jon Secada, N'Sync star Justin Timberlake, and actor Hector Elizondo will be among those presenting the awards.

Spectacular celebration

The 2001 Latin Grammys had originally been scheduled for 11 September, but were postponed following that day's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

It had already been moved from Miami to Los Angeles following fears that protests by anti-communist Cuban exiles could endanger guests' security.

The winners were eventually announced at a press conference in Los Angeles.

Michael Greene, president of both the Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy, has promised "a spectacular worldwide celebration" to make up for last year.

The ceremony will take place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, which has become the new permanent home of the Oscars, and also played host to the final of American Idol.

The awards were established in 1999 to recognise the increasing global popularity of Latin American-influenced music.
