The results of the awards, announced by the Latin Recording Academy, will be revealed on 11 September in Miami.

Juanes was shocked by the news, saying he was "stunned, those guys kept saying my name again and again".

He began his music career with a band in Colombia 15 years ago.

Although he never considered giving up, the most trying part of his journey to success was having patience, he said after the announcements.

The nominees were read by a group of Latin artists including Alejandro Lerner from Argentina, who was nominated for best songwriter and later joked that the hardest part of the day was reading Portuguese.

Announcements were also made by Grammy contenders were Jon Secada, Emilio Estefan and Carlos Ponce.

Last year's first Latin Grammy awards were held in Los Angeles.

They were dominated by Carlos Santana, who won a hat-trick of awards.

The veteran musician's haul included the record-of-the-year prize for Corazon Espinado - a collaboration with Mexican group Mana.

A special honour was also awarded to Tito Puente, one of the world's most prolific composers and performers of Latin jazz, who died earlier last year.
