Low-key affair for Latin Grammys
Carlos Santana
Carlos Santana was last year's big winner
The ill-fated Latin Grammy Awards are to be marked by a low-key press conference to announce the winners.

The ceremony was due to take place on 11 September, just hours after the attacks on New York and Washington.

The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences promptly cancelled the show and has now decided a lavish awards ceremony is no longer appropriate.

The winners of this year's music awards will be announced on 30 October at a press conference at the Conga Room nightclub near Hollywood.

Stars from the Latin music world are expected to attend but no names have yet been announced.

There will be no speeches or performances during the event but artists will not be told who has won until the day.

The event had already suffered a setback when threatened protests by anti-Castro groups forced the venue to be changed from Miami to Los Angeles.

Colombian rock artist Juanes heads the list of prospective winners with nominations in seven categories.

He is up against Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz, who received five nominations including best male pop vocal.

The other big awards ceremony to be affected by the terror attacks in the US was the Emmys.

Ricky Martin

The original show to recognise the biggest stars in television was cancelled in the immediate wake of the tragedy.

Dignified

The re-arranged date was also axed because it was due to be held as the bombing campaign against Afghanistan began.

The Academy of Television, Arts and Science decided to reschedule the ceremony for 4 November.

But organisers are toning down the usually glitzy ceremony in favour of a more dignified affair.

The venue has been switched from the mammoth Shrine auditorium to the more intimate Shubert Theatre and guests will not be wearing evening attire.

Heading the list of nominations is mob drama The Sopranos, with 22.
