| Friday, 26 April, 2002, 12:54 GMT 13:54 UK Latin Grammys get 'spectacular' show The Kodak Theatre: Now the Oscars' fixed venue This year's Latin Grammys, cancelled in 2001, will be handed out in a ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, the organisers have announced. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and its offshoot, the Latin Recording Academy, said 2002's ceremony would take place on 18 September.
The 2001 Latin Grammys had originally been scheduled for 11 September, but were postponed following that day's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. It had already been moved from Miami to Los Angeles following fears that protests by anti-communist Cuban exiles could endanger guests' security. The winners were eventually announced at a press conference in Los Angeles. The awards were established in 1999 to recognise the increasing global popularity of South American-influenced music. Michael Greene, president of both the Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy, promised "a spectacular worldwide celebration" to make up for last year.
Low-key The recently opened Kodak Theatre also became the new permanent home of the Oscars with this year's awards in March. Mr Greene also said there would be two more categories to this year's awards - best contemporary tropical album and best Christian album. Nominations for the 41 categories are expected to be announced in July. The Latin Grammys, which complement the mainstream Grammys - held in February - will be shown on TV across the country. The inaugural Latin Grammys marked the first time a largely Spanish-language programme was broadcast at peak time in the US. | See also: 25 Oct 01 | Entertainment 07 Sep 01 | Entertainment 03 Sep 01 | Entertainment 14 Sep 00 | Entertainment 31 Oct 01 | Entertainment 20 Nov 01 | Oscars 2002 Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
