| Tuesday, 30 October, 2001, 08:50 GMT Latin Grammys finally arrive ![]() Carlos Santana was last year's big winner The Latin Grammy Awards, which have faced a series of disruptions since the 11 September attacks, are to be announced on Tuesday. The awards will be presented at a low-key press conference in a Los Angeles night club. Among the leading nominees are Colombian rocker Juanes, Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, and Brazilian stars Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. Earlier this year the event was moved to Los Angeles after threats of protests by anti-Castro groups in its original city, Miami. Stars The ceremony was then due to take place on 11 September, just hours after the attacks on New York and Washington - but was promptly cancelled.
Stars from the Latin music world are expected to attend the press conference, at the Conga Room nightclub near Hollywood, but no names have been announced apart from the Latin Recording Academy president Michael Greene and the Academy's senior vice-president Enrique Fernandez. There will be no speeches or performances during the event, and artists will not be told who has won in advance.
He is up against Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz, who received five nominations including best male pop vocal. |
