The council said the cuts had been made as a last resort |
Six teachers have been made redundant from the education service in the Borders. The cuts have come as part of efficiency savings demanded by Scottish Borders Council. Three were from secondary schools in the region with the others coming from outdoor education. The council said schools had been asked to make efficiency savings and had "reluctantly" decided to axe the posts after considering all other options. In a statement, the authority confirmed that two of the redundant teachers were from Peebles High School, with a further three from outdoor education. The principal teacher of computing at Jedburgh Grammar was also made redundant. Supply work However, because of a shortage of staff, it has emerged the member of staff is now back at the school as a supply teacher. The council said it was normal for retired teachers to undertake supply work and this would not impact on savings made through removing their permanent job. The secondary schools were faced with a 2% cut in their devolved school management budget. According to the council, it was up to individual schools how the savings were achieved, and after considering all other options it was decided to axe the posts.
