Safety campaign catches hundreds

Police were disappointed by numbers caught speeding
More than 500 people were caught speeding in a summer road safety campaign in Dumfries and Galloway.

Nearly 100 drivers were also found not wearing their seatbelts during the fortnight-long event.

A total of 16 motorists were caught drink-driving and one was found to be under the influence of drugs.

Police expressed disappointment at the number of people caught, despite much publicity before the campaign even got under way.

"Although this campaign is over we will continue to target irresponsible driving in the region," said Sergeant Scott McLachlan.

No problems were found with child car seats during the campaign but drivers have been warned that the law changes on 18 September.

From that date it will be an offence for any child under 4ft 5in tall to travel in a car without a booster or child seat.
