Police in Dumfries and Galloway have for the first time crushed a car because the driver had no insurance. A 25-year-old from Annan was stopped for a routine check on 4 March and his vehicle was seized.
When insurance documents were not produced and a fine went unpaid for two weeks the police had the car destroyed.
A spokesman for the force said the action sent out a strong message to motorists that driving without insurance would not be tolerated.
Sgt Ian Fraser of the road safety unit said: "This shows the powerful new legislation we now have and we will use it if the appropriate paperwork is not produced.
"Ultimately the legislation will assist the police in achieving the objective of reducing road crashes, and the persons killed or seriously injured on our region's roads.
"People who flaunt the law, flaunt safety and if their vehicles are taken from them, they then no longer become a danger to other road users."
The action was taken under the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Retention and Disposal of Seized Motor Vehicles) Regulations 2005.
