Drivers are being asked to take extra care on rural roads |
Police in Dumfries and Galloway have urged drivers to be careful on rural roads after a spate of accidents involving farm animals and machinery. They said that during the harvesting season there is an increased amount of agricultural activity.
Motorists have been asked to take extra care on minor roads and reduce their speed accordingly.
Police also warned that increased growth in hedgerows could reduce line of sight and visibility.
Inspector David McCallum said it was only common sense to take care at this time of year in an area like Dumfries and Galloway.
'Serious accident'
"We live in a rural region and yet the number of accidents involving farm machinery and livestock still surprises me," he said.
"Motorists can reduce the chances of a serious accident by employing a few simple safety measures.
"I would urge everyone to be aware of what is on the road and its conditions.
"During this time of year we should expect to come across extra farm machinery and animals using the roads at any time and be aware of overgrown bushes that may affect our driving."
Mr McCallum said safety should be "paramount" and motorists must use common sense.
