Police scheme snares 'boy racers'
Dumfries police station
Dumfries police are pleased with the results of the operation
A police operation to tackle irresponsible driving in Dumfries town centre has seen 57 incidents reported.

Operation Top Gear ran every weekend in March to tackle the problem in the town centre and the Whitesands area.

Among the offences reported, five drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol with 17 others caught speeding.

Police said the operation had been carried out in response to repeated concerns expressed by the public.

During the operation various methods were used ranging from high profile road checks to plain clothes patrols.

Police also met with representatives of Dumfries Cruise, a group of car enthusiasts, as part of the scheme.

Safer streets

Ch Insp Michael Collins said: "The results show that a number of drivers continue to ignore the rules of the road and while this is the case we will continue to be vigilant and employ similar campaigns."

Town centre councillor Tom Holmes welcomed the positive operation carried out by the police during recent weekends.

He said: "Unfortunately the 'boy racer' behaviour has been a problem for some considerable time.

"I look forward to the town centre streets being much safer for all concerned as a result of the recent police operation."
