Blair adviser visits arena site
View of the County Ground
Swindon's old stadium is owned by the town council
Tony Blair's environment adviser to visit a forest on Friday, which could be torn down to make way for a new football stadium.

Sir Jonathan Porritt toured Swindon's Shaw Forest, where the town's football club want to build a new stadium.

Plans for the ground have angered some residents, who say the site is vital to the community and to wildlife.

Sir Jonathan's visit allowed opponents to air their views on the importance of conserving the forest.

Protest group

Shaw Forest was used as a landfill site until 10 years ago, when it was capped with clay and transformed by the planting of thousands of trees.

Now it is home to birds, badgers, foxes, deer and other wild animals.

People living near the forest have handed out thousands of leaflets and held meetings to try and stop Swindon Town Football Club going ahead with their plans.

The club says it wants to hear everyone's views during a consultation period before a final decision is made.
