Stadium protest stepped up

Swindon's old stadium is owned by the town council
A campaign against plans for a new football stadium in Swindon was stepped up over the weekend.

Thousands of leaflets were delivered to local homes, demanding that plans for a new stadium for the town's football club be scrapped.

Some residents are angry that Swindon Town FC wants to build on the Peatmoor reclamation site in the west of the town destroying recently planted trees.

The Forest Not Stadium group called on families to join a Bank Holiday rally.

Earlier this month residents placed signs on the road near the site of the planned stadium.

Great Western Forest

If the development goes ahead thousands of newly planted trees, which form part of the Great Western Forest, may have to be removed.

An information day is being held by the football club, stadium developers and Swindon Borough Council on Thursday.

The football club says the information day at the Roughmoor Social Hall shows its commitment to a proper consultation exercise.

Swindon's current town centre ground is owned by the borough council.
