Stadium plans 'bad for wildlife'
A model of the proposed new stadium
The site of the proposed new stadium has caused controversy
Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has warned a planned football stadium in Swindon could be bad news for the environment.

Swindon Town Football Club wants to build a new 23,000-seater stadium on land in the Shaw area.

The trust has described the area as a "vital green lung" which is home to birds, crested newts and otters.

The club is currently consulting the public over the plans. The town council has said that is has a "statutory duty" to examine any proposals.

The statement was issued by the council's leader, Mike Bawden, and director of environment and property, Celia Carrington.

It added that the council has "not taken a formal position on the football club's proposals".

The plans have prompted protests in Shaw, where banners have been erected and leaflets handed out.

The club says it wants to move to the new stadium because the current town centre site has become dated and is owned by the council.
