A slip road on the A500 in Stoke-on-Trent is to be closed for four months while construction work is carried out. The entry slip road from Shelton New Road will be shut from Tuesday morning.
The Highways Agency said the closure was needed to allow a culvert running underneath the road to be realigned.
The work is part of the 40m A500 Stoke Pathfinder improvement scheme, aimed at reducing congestion and boosting economic regeneration in the area.
Alternative routes will be available for local traffic and it is hoped the closure will cause only slight delays.
Highways Agency project manager Graham Dakin said: "We would ask motorists and local residents to remember the scheme's long-term benefits when faced with the short-term inconvenience."
Work started in February 2004 and should be completed by the summer of next year.
