People living near York racecourse are being given a chance to buy special cheap tickets for the Royal Ascot meeting in June. An enclosure holding 10,000 racegoers each day is being built opposite the main stand with tickets costing 4.
Households within a two-mile radius of the Knavesmire are being invited to apply for a maximum of four tickets.
Unlike spectators elsewhere on the course, the local residents will be able to bring their own picnics.
Car parking plan
Douglas Erskine-Crum, the Ascot meeting's chief executive, said some people who live close to the track might want to experience the royal occasion without paying normal prices.
"The City of York Council's traffic plan and our own car parking plan is based on the capacity of the main enclosures so there will be no car parking sold with the rails enclosure tickets.
"We're delighted that is has been possible to create this enclosure without undermining the traffic plan.
"It gives people who live locally a chance to be involved and that's something we've marked as a high priority from the start."
The Royal Ascot meeting has been switched to York for 2005 while the Berkshire course is redeveloped.
