Race meeting manager starts work
Shane Chalmers
Shane Chalmers has experience of managing large events
A co-ordinator has been appointed to ensure the smooth running of the Royal Ascot race meeting at York in June.

Shane Chalmers is moving from his job in the education and leisure department at City of York Council to take charge of the arrangements.

He will bring together the teams working on the traffic management and events linked to the five-day racing festival.

Royal Ascot is being held at York while the Berkshire course is redeveloped.

It is expected 300,000 racegoers will be coming to the city for the famous meeting.

"This is a really important event for York," Mr Chalmers said.

"Not only is this a fantastic opportunity for the city in terms of visitor numbers and distinguished guests, in terms of media we can expect to be catapulted onto an international stage."
