The races take place from 14-18 June |
Plans are being made to spend 500,000 on a festival to coincide with the Royal Ascot race meeting in June. This year's Ascot races are being held at York while the Berkshire course is redeveloped.
City of York councillors are being asked to appoint a co-ordinator to ensure the city gets maximum value from the media coverage.
The co-ordinator would organise city centre events and make sure York's reputation is enhanced.
Traffic management
It is expected that 300,000 people will come to the city during the five days of races.
City of York Council has put in a bid with the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, to fund a range of activities as well as traffic management measures.
Bill Woolley, the council's acting director for environment and development, said: "Royal Ascot at York is one of the key dates in the annual racing calendar attracting thousands of spectators, corporate sponsors and support as well extensive national and international media coverage.
"It is important that we help to ensure that York and the wider region is able to achieve lasting benefits from the prestigious race meeting."
The plan to appoint a co-ordinator will be discussed by the council's executive on 1 February.
