Royal race meet 'will boost city'
York racecourse
The royal meeting is coming to York in 2005
The Royal Ascot meeting in York is likely to boost the local economy by around 50m, according to city racecourse officials.

It has been revealed the fixture will be held between 14 and 18 June in 2005.

Temporary stands and hospitality areas will raise the course's capacity from 45,000 to 50,000 people for the event, organisers say.

The famous race meeting is being moved north while building work is carried out at the Berkshire course.

York Racecourse spokesman James Brennan said the event would boost the city's profile.

"As a sporting occasion it is known world wide. Beyond that, it is known for all of its pageantry and it's semi-state nature.

"It is also known world wide as a fashion stakes, as a high society stakes - as a great party atmosphere.

"So that will also be a huge profile boost for the city."
