This year's Reading Festival, one of the last major outdoor music events of the summer, kicked off on Friday. Parts of the site turned muddy because the site had been unable to drain fully after being flooded a month ago. Razorlight headlined the event on Friday, with their songs Before I Fall to Pieces, Don't Go Back to Dalston and America getting the best receptions. Maximo Park, with acrobatic singer Paul Smith, were among the other bands to play on the main stage on the first day. The Gossip singer Beth Ditto, who hitched up her dress to reveal her underwear, sent a message of support to Amy Winehouse from the stage. About 80,000 fans attended the Reading site over the weekend, with a similar number travelling to its twin event in Leeds. The sun did its best to dry out the arena, with fans taking full advantage of the fine weather. Heavy rockers Enter Shikari entertained the crowd, fresh from being named best live act at the Kerrang! Awards.
