Recycling scheme gets more bottle
Kerbside collections of plastic bottles are being introduced to encourage more recycling in Guernsey.

Residents in St Peter Port and St Pierre du Bois can leave out bottles with their weekly collection.

However, motor oil, drain cleaner or similar chemical containers should be included in general rubbish to protect those sorting the plastic.

The initiative is part of the drive to take pressure off the island's Mont Cuet landfill site.

Householders are asked to place bottles in the provided blue waste bags along with newspapers, and not in carrier bags which could be blown about in strong winds.

Meanwhile, the holes in special plastic bottle banks around the island are being made larger after complaints they were too small.

The recycling scheme is part of the plan to reduce the amount of landfill waste at Mont Cuet. Plastic makes up about 11% of an average household dustbin's contents.
