Work-alone smokers may escape ban
Cigarette over ashtray
Only certain areas would be exempt from a smoking ban
Smokers who work entirely alone could escape a forthcoming ban on lighting up in public places in Guernsey.

The Commerce and Employment Department wants to allow workers such as van drivers the right to smoke while alone.

Under proposals being brought to the States this month, only certain areas of prisons, nursing homes and hotel rooms would be exempt from the ban.

But Commerce and Employment thinks it is unfair and unenforceable for single person workplaces to be included.

It said it was common sense to exclude such working areas since the original intention of preventing passive smoking was not an issue.

Commerce and Employment is also hoping to persuade deputies to exclude cruise liners in Guernsey waters from the ban.

It is arguing that creating red tape for the tourist industry could discourage operators from stopping their ships at the island.
