Few exempt from island smoke ban
Guernsey's health minister is warning there will be few exemptions when a smoking ban is introduced in the island later this year.

Deputy Peter Roffey is aiming to enforce the ban which covers enclosed public places from 1 July.

Mr Roffey said that pubs will not be exempt, regardless of whether or not they serve food.

But public buildings which are used privately, such as hotel rooms and long-term care homes, will.

While the States agreed to the ban last year, licensees opposed to the move had been pinning their hopes on the detail of the law.

The Department of Health and Social Services will bring its proposals to the States for premises which could be exempt next month.

Mr Roffey said the plans have been based largely on the model which works in Ireland.
