States plan to alter smoking laws
Ashtray
A smoking ban where food is served is being proposed
Graphic images of people who are suffering from smoking-related illnesses could soon become part of cigarette packaging in Jersey.

The States has agreed plans which is likely to mean big changes for smokers in the island.

Changes to 30-year-old laws governing smoking are being put forward to make the new plans possible.

The island's health authorities want a ban in most public eating places and an end to local tobacco advertising.

Steve Harvey, the acting director of public health, said that more explicit warnings will be used on cigarette packets if the plans are approved.

Health and Social Services has asked for the law to be changed so that tobacco cannot be advertised locally and smokers would be banned from lighting up where food is served in pubs and clubs.

Under the plans there would also be rules about where cigarette vending machines were allowed.
