Vote favours waste plant inquiry

Guernsey's States has agreed to delay plans for a 72m waste to energy incinerator on Thursday.

The house voted by 23 votes to 20 in favour of a requete brought by Deputy Scott Ogier which asked for an inquiry into the proposals to build the plant.

The planned 100ft (30m) high plant and cost about 72m has been criticised by locals for the affect it may have.

But environment officials say they have been closely involved with the project and there is no cause for alarm.

'Grave doubts'

Deputy Ogier said he had come to the debate prepared to be persuaded that he was wrong.

He told the States: "I think we need an inquiry into looking at all the alternatives that are available for us.

"The mass burn incinerator is so large and so expensive, I have grave doubts that it is the best option for Guernsey.

"I would like us to look at it again in as short a period of time as possible to ensure that if that is the right one then we should proceed with it, if it isn't the right way to go then we pick something else."
