Waste plant is to be monitored

It is hoped to get the waste plant finished by the end of 2006
Guernsey's new Waste to Energy plant will be carefully monitored by the Environmental Health Department, islanders are being told.

The plant, which is to be at Longue Hougue, has been criticised by locals for the affect it may have on the area.

Work on the 100ft (30m) high structure is due to start in July.

But Chief Environmental Health Officer John Cook said his staff had been involved with the plant's plans all the way and there was no cause for alarm.

Staff from the Environmental Health Department had been involved with the plant from the waste strategy stage, up to decisions on design and the final implementation of the project, Mr Cook said.

He said: "We have negotiated, we have advised, we deal with the designers and we will do so with the operators.

"And now that the States has approved the new control of environmental pollution law, by the time the plant is up and operating we will have the legal powers to ensure that the best standards are observed."

He said he was confident Guernsey made the best decision to go ahead with the plant, as it would generate a new source of electricity for the island.
