Plea to spend more on waste plant

It is hoped to get the waste plant finished by the end of 2006
Guernsey's government is being urged to spend money on a waste-to-energy plant to protect the island's appearance.

Island National Trust president Roland Ogier said he believed partly burying the plant could limit aesthetic damage and would be worth any extra cost.

He has described the plant as "ugly" and said no price could be attached to the view from the Little Russell.

However, the States is reluctant to increase the budget, which is already higher than initially anticipated.

Contracts due

The planned plant will be about 100ft (30m) high and cost about 72m.

It has been criticised by locals for the affect it may have on the area.

But environmental officials say they have been involved with the plant's plans throughout the process and there was no cause for alarm.

Contracts for the building are due to be signed in the first week of July and it is hoped to get the plant completed by the end of 2006.
