Protesters rally over waste plant

It is hoped to get the waste plant finished by the end of 2006
Hundreds of people in Guernsey opposed to a waste to energy plant have demonstrated against the project.

Island politicians were to commit to building the 100ft (30m) high plant next month.

But a request placed before the States by Deputy Scott Ogier, to be debated on Wednesday, has called for a rethink.

Opponents of the plans say that the project's 80m cost is too high and other alternatives have not been properly investigated.

Deputy Ogier joined protesters at Bulwer Avenue to speak against the plant planned for Longue Hougue.

It has been criticised by locals for the affect it may have on the area.

But environmental officials say they have been involved with the plant's plans throughout the process and there was no cause for alarm.

More than 100 people including a number of States deputies attended a presentation on the proposed waste to energy plant on Friday night at Les Cotils.

It was designed to give islanders a chance to look at the plans and question experts.

Contracts for the building are due to be signed in the first week of July and there is a penalty clause of 140,000 for each month of delay.
