Shop assistant Carys Hunter, 41, of East Calder, Livingston, said: "He was somebody that you saw locally.

"We had met him a couple of times � when they were canvassing he came door to door, and my daughter showed him round when she was still at school.

"It is quite poignant that it was out in that beautiful countryside when it happened."
