Retired William Smith, 76, of Knightsridge, Livingston, said: "He was a good MP for Livingston � he was all for the people.

"He was connected with the constituents � people will be sad that he has passed away. He would have been MP for years to come because he was that liked.

"It's bad that he died young � all good people die young."
