"He was a man of the people," said telecoms worker Derek Hastings, 48, of Ladywell.

"Without a shadow of a doubt he was held in the highest regard round here.

"He was a good local politician, because he did things for the local community.

"They have to have a by-election now � they are big boots to fill, as far as I am concerned."
