
Since the advent of multiparty democracy a candidates home region has had a big influence on the outcome of the vote.
Seven candidates are running for president, including the incumbent Bingu wa Mutharika for the Democratic Progressive Party and John Tembo, of the opposition coalition between the Malawi Congress Party and the United democratic front.
Our reporters spoke to voters around the country on election day.

It is the country's fourth democratic elections since the end of the Hastings Banda regime; we look back at the campaign but also at the challenges facing the future head of state.
Chakuchanya Harawa spoke to Malawian political analyst Rafik Hajat of The Institute for Policy Interaction and he asked him first what he thought of the campaign.
