John Tembo was former President Hastings Banda's right-hand man and has twice been the defeated presidential candidate of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
This time round, John Tembo, who is 77, has forged an electoral alliance with the United Democratic Front of former president Bakili Muluzi, and is seen as the main challenger to Bingu wa Mutharika in the presidential race.
Chakuchanya Harawa met the candidate in Lilongwe and asked how important these elections are to the MCP.
