UNDER 9’S LEAGUE CUP

Six second half goals saw Trowbridge Town Youth safely though to the next round of the cup following their away tie against Melksham Park. Some fine keeping by the Melksham keeper kept Trowbridge at bay in the first half. The eventual break came five minutes into the second half after a cross by George Lawford was converted by Liam Naylor. The other Trowbridge scorers were Thomas Green (3) who for the second week running has been the main difference between the teams, Bradley Neate and Conner McKay. Credit must be given to Melksham's players who despite the score line continued to play some good football and never let their heads drop.

A pulsating Cup tie saw Westbury Youth come away with a well deserved victory over a very strong AFC Calne side. Westbury dominated the game from the kick off and had a number of good attacks which stretched the Calne defence before DJ Wheeler opened the scoring with a well taken goal. A rare attack from Calne resulted in a penalty decision which was coolly converted by their Captain Stuart Windsor. Westbury started the second half where they left off in the first half and continued to dominate the game. An excellent flowing move then saw Ashley Bull restore Westbury’s lead. Westbury continued to look for the goal that would finish the game but a breakaway from Calne saw their captain Windsor finish off a long ball attack. With extra time looming, Westbury looked for the winner but strong defence from Calne ensured the game moved into extra time. With both teams tiring, a winning goal would not come for either team and penalties were taken. With both Westbury and Calne converting their penalties (Westbury scorers:- DJ Wheeler, Gavin Francis, Sam Newton, Flynn Precup and Lewis Jordan) the scores were tied at 5-5 when goalkeeper Tom Lucus became the hero of the Westbury team by saving a Calne penalty. In spite of appalling weather conditions both AFC Corsham and Melksham Town Youth contributed to a breathtaking game of football. Although the defences appeared to be in control most of the time, there were still plenty of chances created at both ends throughout the entire game. It was early in the second half when Melksham made a crucial breakthrough. An excellent Corsham attack and missed opportunity led to a quick counterattack from which captain Liam Harris was able to drive home from short range. With opportunities at both ends continuing the next goal was going to be crucial. Corsham were unlucky not to level the scores with a blistering long-range drive that looked goal bound all the way. Somehow the Melksham keeper James Pritchard managed to get enough of his fingertips to the ball to turn the shot onto the crossbar. A magnificent save. In the end Melksham settled the game with a well-worked corner lifted into the penalty area and headed home by striker Sam Rose. Very well done both teams. Melksham goal scorers were Liam Harris (1) and Sam Rose (1).
