Why do Santa Ana winds make wildfires worse?

The deadly wildfires in California have been exacerbated in recent days by the region's Santa Ana winds.

These dry, warm winds have the effect of removing any remaining moisture from vegetation, increasing fire risk, as well as fanning the flames and spreading the fire further.
