VO: Ambrose is an apprentice pizza maker at the world famous Grecian Pizza Parlour. He’s taking his new job very seriously. He’s even come in early today, before the pizza parlour is open. It looks like he’s making something.
Can you tell us what you are doing?
Ambrose: Oh, yeah, yeah, I've been working on some new ideas at home and I've come in today to try one out. Got an idea for a new pizza, here have a look. It's gonna be fantastic.
VO: Can you tell us what’s in it?
Ambrose: Oh no, no, no, no, no, it's a surprise. I want it to be a surprise, but it is gonna be brilliant and I think the boss, he might even put it on the menu. So, uh, yeah, I'll uh…, thanks.
VO: Off he goes. He begins with a classic tomato sauce base. Nicely spread there.
Ambrose: Pepperoni.
VO: Now pointy pieces of Pepperoni. Look how neatly he’s laying them down. But he’s only putting pepperoni on part of the pizza. Look at that, he’s made a right angle. This is clever.
Ambrose: Asparagus.
VO: Asparagus now, this is very interesting and it looks as if he’s going for another angle with those nice straight spears.
What else is he going to use? Cherry tomatoes… and blueberries. He’s done exactly half the pizza so far and he’s made exactly the same angle as he did with the asparagus slice. Baby Sweetcorn now, what a doozy. And that’s an a-cute angle of 30 degrees. And he’s painting it with a coffee glaze. Oh a nice touch. What’s he going to put on next? We’ve come to expect the unexpected from this young man. Huh, I didn’t expect that though. Hmm, or that. He’s either a madman or a genius. It’s a fine line.
Into the oven it goes. Now he just has to wait. I bet those angles are going to taste amazing.
Ambrose: Phew.
VO: Look at the pizza. Remember there are 360 degrees in a circle. Remember there are 360 degrees in a circle. What kind of angle did Ambrose make with the pepperoni slice of pizza? What kind of angle did Ambrose make with the pepperoni slice of pizza?
Altogether, the pepperoni, asparagus and sweetcorn slices total 165 degrees. If the sweetcorn slice is 30 degrees, how many degrees is the asparagus slice? The pepperoni, asparagus and sweetcorn slices total 165 degrees. The sweetcorn slice is 30 degrees. How many degrees is the asparagus slice?
If Ambrose takes away the asparagus slice and the jelly baby slice, which has an angle of 150 degrees, what is the total of the angles he is left with? If Ambrose takes away the asparagus slice and the jelly baby slice, which has an angle of 150 degrees, what is the total of the angles he is left with?
Video summary
At the Grecian Pizza Parlour, new apprentice Ambrose is left to invent pizzas with toppings of various angles around the circle.
He makes right angles, acute angles and we learn how angles in a circle total 360 degrees.
Three questions at the end of the clip consolidate the language and understanding of angles.
This is from the series: Let's Do Maths.
Teacher Notes
This clip could be used as a lesson starter to reinforce the understanding of angles totalling 360 degrees.
The scenario ends with three differentiated questions that can be paused for response, discussion, finding solutions and stimulating extensions to the learning, as children make up their own pizza angle combinations.
This clip will be relevant for teaching Maths at KS2 in England and Wales and Second Level in Scotland and KS1 and KS2 in Northern Ireland.
