JASMINE: Hello and welcome to Lava zone.
JOHNNY: - I'm Jonny.
JASMINE: - And I'm Jasmine.
JASMINE: I'm excited to be here today.
JOHNNY: Me too Jasmine, let's get started.
JASMINE: Good idea, as we meet the players
JASMINE: who will show us how to play Lava Zone,
JASMINE: let's do warm up exercises with them.
JASMINE: First, we have Lucy.
JASMINE: She is stretching out with some lunges.
JOHNNY: Let's join her.
JOHNNY: In fact, whenever you see the Join In sign,
JOHNNY: you can get involved too.
GRUNTING
MUSIC
JASMINE: Then we have Max, showing us some press-ups.
JOHNNY: That's great form, shall we do a few?
JASMINE: I think we should.
GRUNTING
MUSIC
JASMINE: Next up it's Mohamed.
JOHNNY: Looks like he's running on the spot for his warmup.
JASMINE: Look at those pumping feet.
JASMINE: PANTING
JASMINE: That will get his heart beating faster,
JASMINE: sending blood to the muscles which always happens
JASMINE: with energetic exercise.
MUSIC
JASMINE: Here's Hadiya doing star jumps.
JOHNNY: Let's practice.
JASMINE: Star jumps, a great way to get blood pumping around your body,
JASMINE: supplying your muscles with lots of oxygen.
MUSIC
JOHNNY: Impressive, I definitely feel all warmed up and ready to play.
JOHNNY: It's time we learn the rules to…
JOHNNY: BOTH:Lava Zone!
JOHNNY: Remember, you can play along as you learn the rules.
JOHNNY: Just look out for the J-symbol.
JASMINE: Look at the floor, it's turning to lava!
JOHNNY: Oh, that looks pretty hot!
JASMINE: Players are going to try to make their way across dangerous lava.
ROARING CROWD
JOHNNY: Luckily, they have rocks and boulders
JOHNNY: they can jump onto for safety.
JASMINE: Lucky is right Jonny!
JASMINE: Because that lava is boiling!
JASMINE: These guys are only safe as long as they can hold their balance
JASMINE: for three seconds.
JOHNNY: Can you hold your balance for three seconds?
JOHNNY: You can make your own rocks and boulders from objects around you.
JOHNNY: To stop yourself falling into the lava and getting melted.
JASMINE: Oh no, watch out!
JASMINE: More lava coming in from the right-hand side!
JASMINE:
JASMINE: You can use hops, skips and jumps if the objects are on the floor.
JOHNNY: Take your time.
JOHNNY: You don't want to fall into hot lava.
JASMINE: Looks like Mohamed has found a fix point on the ground
JASMINE: to focus on while holding his balance.
JASMINE: Great idea!
JOHNNY: That's a good way to hold balance.
JOHNNY: But uh oh! Max has closed his eyes.
JOHNNY: That's not good.
JOHNNY: It's hard to hold your balance if you can't focus
JOHNNY: on a fixed object.
JASMINE: And he's fallen!
JOHNNY: Oh no!
JOHNNY: Oh no is right, he'll have to sit out till the next round.
JASMINE: Lucy's looking wobbly too,
JASMINE: she's not holding any body tension.
JOHNNY: You're right, she doesn't have a solid base
JOHNNY: to help her keep her body stiff.
JASMINE: Oh no!
JOHNNY: Lucy's fallen too!
JASMINE: Always remember, keep at least one foot flat on the ground
JASMINE: when trying to balance.
JASMINE: It will help you form a strong body shape by having a solid base.
JOHNNY: Just ahead of her, Hadiya is demonstrating a great
JOHNNY: Albatross pose.
JASMINE: Holding arms out like a bird spreading its wings
JASMINE: will make it easier to keep balance.
JOHNNY: That's worth practicing in the class room.
JASMINE: So, that's the end of the round and we're all safe from the lava.
JASMINE: Let's have a reminder of those tips.
JOHNNY: To be good at playing Lava Zone,
JOHNNY: you need to be good at controlling balance.
JOHNNY: Firstly, it's important to make sure your foot
JOHNNY: is flat on the ground, creating a solid base.
JASMINE: Secondly, a good idea is to look at something that doesn't move
JASMINE: as it helps you keep still.
JASMINE: So, look at a door or something that doesn't move
JASMINE: to keep yourself from wobbling.
JASMINE: Thirdly, you can use your arms to help maintain body tension.
JASMINE: And remember to keep smiling!
JASMINE: It won't help you balance but if you fall
JASMINE: at least you'll be laughing!
JOHNNY: Shall we give it another go?
JASMINE: Definitely!
JASMINE: So, everybody go to the right-hand side of the classroom.
JASMINE: There's lava coming!
ALARM
MUSIC
JOHNNY: Three, two, one, quick perform a balance.
JOHNNY: Hold it, keep holding it.
JOHNNY: Three, two, one.
JASMINE: Oh no! More lava coming from the other side of the room.
JASMINE: Walk to the left side of the room.
JASMINE: Perform a harder balance by bending lower to the floor.
JASMINE: MUSIC
JOHNNY: Oh no! There's lava coming up from the floor!
JOHNNY: Use your chair as a safety rock.
MUSIC
JASMINE: Well done!
JASMINE: You're the heroes of the Lava Zone!
BOTH: See you next time!
Join commentators Johnny and Jasmine as they introduce a range of basic movements to help your class gain the skills they will need to complete the Lava Zone.
The core idea behind Lava Zone is that pupils imagine that the floor is made of lava and they must avoid it at all costs!
Pupils are given areas of safety in the classroom, and must find their way to them using jumps, hops and skips, as the lava sweeps from one side of the room to the other.
To remain in the safety zone, children must hold a balance.
Teacher Notes
It provides plenty of opportunities for your class to join in with the action on screen.
Once they have mastered the key skills in the warm up, you could set up your classroom as a Lava Zone and complete the challenges.
You could also use equipment, such as benches and other apparatus, as ‘mountains’ that the children can use as their safety point.
Key curriculum skills include balance, coordination, running, jumping, basic movements, agility, teamwork, speed, creativity, imagination, gymnastics based (early specialisation sport/key in developing functional movement), personal challenge and intrinsic motivation.
Curriculum Notes
This clip will be relevant for teaching Physical Education. This topic appears in KS1 and KS2 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Early and First level and Second Level in Scotland.
