| Sunday, 21 July, 2002, 12:53 GMT 13:53 UK Woosnam and Dredge end in style Woosnam was happy with his day's work Ian Woosnam and Bradley Dredge ended the 131st Open Championship on a high note by carding their best rounds of the week on Sunday. The Welshmen made the most of the calm conditions at Muirfield to shoot three-under-par rounds of 68. David Park, though, had a disastrous nine-over-par round of 80, which included an 11 on the par three 13th. He played no fewer than eight shots in a deep greenside bunker, trying various ways to get out before he finally made it to the cheers of the crowd. Woosnam had promised to go for broke in the final round in an attempt to climb the leaderboard. He did not quite manage the birdie blitz which would have taken him among the early clubhouse leaders, but the Welshman was satisfied with a tidy round. The birdies came at the third, 10th, 13th and 15th, with the sole bogey coming at the par five ninth. That gave him one-over-par total of 285 for the championship.
Dredge, who was playing on the final weekend of The Open for the first time, finished a shot better off on level par thanks to a birdie on a final hole. "I could have shot 62 or 63 today if I'd have putted half decent," said Woosnam. "What has cost me this week are the par fives. I've played them three-over. I don't think I had one birdie on a par five and that's terrible really. "I didn't play very well for three days, but I played fantastic today. It could have all happened for me. "But it's given me something to work on for the next few days because I tried something different today so I'm looking forward to the next time I play."
He is yet to win on the European Tour, but is heading for the Wales Open (August 8-11) at the Celtic Manor full of confidence. "I would like to perform well down there," said Dredge. "I want to win this year and that would be a lovely place to do it. "Being on home territory, I'd like to think I'm going to know the course a bit better than the other courses and it's nice to have a bit of home support as well." Bradley Dredge - 70 72 74 68 - 284 (level par) Ian Woosnam - 72 72 73 68 - 285 (one-over-par) David Park - 73 67 74 80 - 294 (ten-over-par) |
