| Venus sets up sisters' final ![]() Williams was never in any danger of losing out Venus Williams (US) beat Clarisa Fernandez (Arg) 6-1 6-4 Venus Williams will have to beat her sister Serena if she is to claim a first French Open crown after she swept through her semi-final. Williams had little difficulty with unseeded Clarisa Fernandez, although the Argentine made a brief comeback late in the second set.
It was not enough, however, and Roland Garros will now witness a repeat of last year's US Open final, which older sister Venus won comfortably. "I never felt like I was going to lose the match, but I certainly didn't want to prolong it," said Venus. "I felt comfortable in the rallies but just missed a few shots here and there." Serena earlier came through a tough three-set match with top seed and defending champion Jennifer Capriati.
And the younger Williams sister will be boosted by the knowledge that she has overtaken Capriati to become world number two, behind Venus. Fernandez began the match with a double fault, and it proved to be a sign of things to come. The 20-year-old lost the first set in just 19 minutes and did not hold her serve until the eighth game of the second set. "I was rather struck by playing in the main court for the first time," she said. "I need more experience, but I have many years ahead of me to come back and feel that I have the right to be on centre court." Earlier victories over last year's runner-up Kim Clijsters and 13th seed Elena Demientieva were quickly forgotten, and Williams wrapped up the match in 55 minutes. |
