The 20-year-old, who beat elder sister Venus in straight sets to win her second Grand Slam title, will move up to number two in the next set of world rankings. Venus will be the world number one but Serena said after Saturday's victory that the top spot is among her next goals.
"Venus is number one on paper and hopefully I can get there soon," she said. But she stressed that there is no animosity between the siblings. "I just want to thank Venus for supporting me all the way and just being the best sister in the whole world," she said after her 7-5 6-3 win. And while she said she felt "a little sad" that Venus had had to lose, she added that there were compensations to beating her sister in the final. "I am more glad to have triumphed over Venus than any other player simply because we are both going back home with the maximum of money and points." Serena admitted that she had been nervous about playing her sister and said that explained the erratic nature of the tennis on display. "I think that both of us wanted to win so much we were a little tight out there," she said. "There were so many ups and downs, especially in the first set," she added. "We kept breaking each other and at some point I really thought: `Oh gosh, our father is not going to be happy to see us play like that."' Venus, however, pinpointed her serve as the crucial factor in the match. "I don't think I served well - that's where the key of the match was. "Serena played tough and I could not make all the shots I wanted," she added. "Normally, I have had better performances in Grand Slam finals, but you can't win them all. "I'll just have to do better next time. I hope there will be chances for me again in the future." |
