Scotland face South Africa at Murrayfield on Saturday searching for their first win against the Springboks in 33 years. A try and a penalty from Ian Smith gave the Scots a 6-3 win in 1969. However, since then the Scots have lost out to the 1995 World Cup winners on four occasions, shipping 183 points in the process. Scotland name the same side that brushed Romania aside last week, while the visitors make sweeping changes after losing to France. It is a relatively inexperienced Scottish side with Nikki Walker, Stuart Moffat and Bruce Douglas all winning their second caps. And stand-off Gordon Ross keeps his place to earn a third cap, keeping Gregor Townsend on the bench. Scotland will look to Brendan Laney to provide inspiration with the boot after the versatile New Zealand-born player broke the 100 points mark last week.
Laney, who plays full-back for Edinburgh, will be at centre for Scotland on Saturday. South Africa coach Rudolph Straeuli has made 10 alterations to the side which slumped to a 30-10 loss against France in Marseilles. Long term injury victims Butch James and Robbie Fleck will make their first starts for more than a year. Last week's debutants Wessel Roux and Marco Wentzel will make their first starts in the green and gold, while Deon Carstens, Pierre Uys and Friedrich Lombard will get a first taste of Test rugby. The Springboks will be keen to atone for a sloppy performance in France but the Scots will feel they have their best chance in a long time to claim victory over a southern hemisphere side. The Scots can take heart from a solid display against Romania and inspiration from Ireland, who shocked the rugby world with a win over Australia last week. However, the home nation will have to be at the top of their game if they are to give a sold-out Murrayfield an afternoon to remember. Scotland: S Moffat, N Walker, A Craig, B Laney, C Paterson, G Ross, B Redpath (capt), S Taylor, B Pountney, M Leslie, S Grimes, S Murray, B Douglas, G Bulloch, T Smith. South Africa: W Greeff, B Paulse, M Joubert, R Fleck, F Lombard, B James, J Conradie, W Roux, L Van Biljon, D Carstens, M Wentzel, J Labuschagne, C Krige, P Uys, J Van Niekerk. |
