Top sprinter helps Welsh rugby
Darren Campbell
Campbell wants to coach with Wales at the World Cup
Olympic sprint silver medallist Darren Campbell has been drafted into the Wales rugby union coaching set-up to improve sprinting techniques.

Wales coach Steve Hansen has invited Cardiff-based Campbell to join the team's training squad as they prepare for the November internationals.

  Wales matches in November
1 Nov: Wales v Romania (The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham; 1905 GMT tbc)
9 Nov: Wales v Fiji (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff; 1630 GMT)
16 Nov: Wales v Canada (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff; 1630 GMT)
23 Nov: Wales v New Zealand (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff; 1430 GMT)
Romania, Fiji, Canada and New Zealand visit Wales next month for what Hansen has described as a "mini World Cup" for his side.

Campbell has jumped at the chance to help out, and the Sydney Olympics 200m silver medallist hopes to become a full-time member of the coaching team.

"My ambition is to become a coach with them and I would love to go to Australia with the team for the World Cup next summer," said the 29-year-old.

"The main aim is to improve the speed and fitness of the players and hopefully that will be to the benefit of the side."

Hansen has already brought in Andrew Hoare as a fitness coach and Scott Johnson as skills coach to help him turn Wales' fortunes around.

Some of the boys have got genuine pace
Darren Campbell on Wales players
The side has won only one of their last nine international matches.

Campbell admitted he thought the invitation was a joke at first: "But the more I thought about it the more I realised it was a good idea."

He added: "At first the players were treating it as a bit of a laugh, but by the end of the week everyone was taking it very seriously.

"The players are different shapes and sizes, which is a challenge in itself.

"Some of the boys have got genuine pace. There's a pre-conception that rugby players aren't the quickest - but that's not true."
