Charvis supports Neath merger
Swansea's Colin Charvis
Charvis wants Welsh clubs to be more competitive
Swansea's Colin Charvis believes his club should merge with local rivals Neath.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport Online, Charvis says Welsh rugby clubs will only be able to compete with the best in Europe if they combine resources.

All five Welsh clubs lost their Heineken Cup matches this weekend.

Only Llanelli have managed to win either of their two matches so far.

The issue of reducing the number of Welsh sides playing at the highest level by forming province sides or 'superclubs' is not a new one.

It was first raised by former national coach Graham Henry two years ago.

But now with clubs like Swansea facing a crisis both on and off the field, the revolutionary idea is gathering support.

"There's talk of a merger with Neath and that has to be a positive thing," Charvis told BBC Sport Online.

"The Welsh clubs just aren't performing in the Celtic or European competitions.

"We've come to realise that we haven't got a strong squad, and those playing haven't applied themselves as they should.

"The fingers will be pointed at John Connolly, but he's a good coach who's frustrated that players aren't showing a professional attitude."

Swansea will soon have a new 20,000 seater stadium at Morfa.

Club captain Scott Gibbs says it is imperative that a team worthy of playing at the stadium will be on the field.

"If that means Swansea and Neath merging then so be it," Gibbs said.

"That can only be good for the game in this part of the country."

Charvis is expected to be named Wales captain on Tuesday for the November internationals.
