| Tuesday, 28 May, 2002, 09:35 GMT 10:35 UK England pick young squad James Simpson-Daniel wins his first tour place England coach Clive Woodward has named 14 uncapped players in his 30-man squad to tour Argentina in June. The new boys include Sale back-rower Peter Anglesea, Leicester's Adam Balding and Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel, who made a stunning try-scoring impact against the Barbarians on Sunday. Simpson-Daniel's Gloucester team-mate James Forrester and London Irish flanker Paul Gustard are the only members of Sunday's starting XV not to be selected for the tour. The highly-rated Forrester will either go to the Under-21 World Cup in South Africa or concentrate on England's build-up to the Commonwealth Games Sevens. But other, more experienced names have also been left at home.
Northampton scrum-half Matt Dawson misses out, as do the Leicester trio Graham Rowntree, Martin Corry and Dorian West. Dawson had been ready to tour, but has now been given a summer of rest along with other senior players told to recharge their batteries. Woodward explained: "Matt has had a slight problem with his knee, and it has been a long season for him. "It is time to give him a good summer off." And he said of Forrester's omission: "James is certainly going to play for England one day, but for his own development at this stage, he is better off going to South Africa or being with the sevens. "He shouldn't be disappointed - he is an outstanding player." Surprise selection In Dawson's absence, Andy Gomarsall looks set to start at scrum-half in the Buenos Aires Test on 22 June. Woodward's surprise selection is 20-year-old Northampton prop Robbie Morris. A product of the Saints' academy, Morris has been capped at under-18 level but has played just seven senior matches for his club.
Despite having named so many uncapped players, Woodward is happy that his squad has sufficient quality to win in one of international rugby's toughest arenas. He said: "These players are good enough to step up, and we will learn a lot from this trip. "We can win both games in Argentina with this group of players. "And I also believe that a lot of players can come through on the trip. "I hadn't really heard of someone like Declan Danaher 12 months ago, and this time last year, I hadn't really thought about Ben Kay, Lewis Moody or Charlie Hodgson." England squad: Backs: G Appleford (London Irish), P Christophers (Bristol), M Cueto (Sale), A Gomarsall (Gloucester), C Hodgson (Sale), M Horak (London Irish), B Johnston (Saracens), J Lewsey (Wasps), L Lloyd (Leicester), J Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester), K Sorrell (Saracens), T Stimpson (Leicester), D Walder (Newcastle), N Walshe (Sale).
