| Bulls overpower Wolves Bradford overcame a battling Warrington side to tie up a 38-12 win in a bruising fourth-round Powergen Challenge Cup tie.
Warrington were leading 12-4 after 32 minutes thanks to a Darren Burns try and three penalties and a conversion from Lee Briers. But Bradford skipper Robbie Paul sparked the anticipated comeback and the game began to turn the visitors' way when Graham Appo was penalised for lying on in the tackle. Paul Deacon kicked the resultant penalty to tie the scores at 12-12 at half-time and, when Lesley Vainikolo went over within two minutes of the re-start, the game was over as a contest. Full-back Leon Pryce took advantage of the sin-binning of Sid Domic on 52 minutes to race 50 minutes for a try. Vainikolo, Scott Naylor and Shontayne Hape then added further tries and Deacon took his goal tally to seven from nine attempts.
Earlier, Wakefield caused an upset by beating neighbours Castleford 20-18 in a thrilling game. It was a keenly fought derby, with Ryan Hudson and Matt Seers being sin-binned in the first half after coming to blows. Mark Lennon scored a try for Castleford within two minutes as an ill-disciplined Wakefield looked like they might be overwhelmed. But the home side levelled through Gareth Ellis before the break. Wakefield landed a penalty before the Tigers went ahead twice through a try from Danny Orr and another from Lennon. But each time Wakefield battled back. First Ben Jeffries then Waisale Sovatabua scored tries to delight the crowd at Belle Vue.
In Saturday's late games, Batley beat amateur side Wath Brow 18-6, while St Helens thrashed Union Treiziste Catalane 70-6 in France. French club UTC were given a harsh indication of what to expect if they join Super League in 2005. They may be title contenders in their own domestic league but they were simply no match for the power and pace of Saints. Sean Long was the star performer, crossing for four of Saints' 13 tries and converting nine goals for a personal tally of 34 points. | Top Challenge Cup stories now: Links to more Challenge Cup stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
