Villeneuve face assault inquiry
Villeneuve were beaten by a last-minute try
Villeneuve were beaten by a last-minute try
The Rugby Football League are to investigate an alleged assault on referee Peter Taberner at the end of the Challenge Cup tie between Featherstone and Villeneuve.

A last-minute try by winger Adrian Flynn earned Rovers a dramatic 26-22 win in Sunday's controversial third-round clash.

One of Villeneuve's travelling officials is alleged to have lunged at the Wigan referee after the game.

I am waiting for a video of the match and written reports

The RFL's Stuart Cummings

He was apparently restrained by a steward and Taberner escaped unhurt.

But RFL technical executive Stuart Cummings has called for reports from match commissioner Jim Smith and the two clubs.

"I've had a verbal report from the match commissioner and there are some things that concern me," said Cummings.

"I am waiting for a video of the match and written reports and I don't want to say too much until I receive them."

French champions Villeneuve were angry over a 16-5 penalty count against them, and president Pierre Soubiran has threatened not to allow his side to play any more games in England.

'Despicable'

Feelings were also running high in the Featherstone camp, with coach Andy Kelly counting the cost of head injuries to 11 of his players.

Kelly said Villeneuve's tactics were "despicable" and against the spirit of the game.

Villeneuve had two players - ex-Salford centre Jason Webber and Test hooker Vincent Wulf - sin-binned.

And former New Zealand captain Quentin Pongia was put on report for an alleged foul tackle.

  • Union Treiziste Catalan captain Aurelien Cologni will be dealt with by the French Federation following his dismissal during his side's 38-4 win at Gateshead.

Cologni was shown the red card five minutes from the end of the match for punching Gateshead loose forward Chris Fletcher.

UTC are the only French team to reach the fourth round, when Super League clubs join the action.
