Wilkinson vows to fight on
Wakefield's Adrian Vowles
Victory for Wakefield meant misery for Salford
BBC Sport's Dave Woods

Salford chairman John Wilkinson has ordered no weeping at the Willows.

That's because he is already plotting the Reds' return to the Tetley's Super League.

Within minutes of the club's painful defeat to Castleford - a loss that condemned them to life in National League One next season - Wilkinson vowed: "Tomorrow's a new day and we must be positive.

"We want to get back into Super League as soon as we can and myself and my other two board members are now looking to keep us full-time. We think that is very important."

That will be a big relief to coach Karl Harrison, who was so upset after the relegation decider that he did not leave the dressing room to speak to the waiting press.

He can mount a promotion campaign next year with a more or less fully professional squad, as Huddersfield have done this year.

Wilkinson has also committed his future to Salford, despite admitting that the club is still up for sale to the right buyer.

"This is my 21st season as chairman of Salford and I want the very best for this club," he said.

"If there's a Jack Walker out there and he wants to give me a ring I'll certainly take his call.

"But I've always said that if the right offer wasn't there, then I would be staying at this club - and that remains the case.

"It's very hard doing what we try to do at this club, but we have a committed 2,500 fans.

"We've got directors who have always shown their commitment to the club and a hard-working staff who bring in revenue from other sources.

"That's something we have got to keep intact."

With Salford's demise will come suggestions from some quarters that the time is now ripe for the club to merge with their spiritual neighbours Swinton.

But that is something Wilkinson definitely rules out.

"I think Swinton are going in their own direction," he said.

"Now they've got a nice little ground at Moor Lane it seems to be working out for them, and I wish them all the best."

"We have our own club to think about. I can only think of one club and that is the club I love and respect - Salford."
