But the Wildacts needed Castleford to beat Salford at The Willows to ensure they survived the drop from the Tetley's Super League.
The final whistle sparked wild scenes of celebration at Belle Vue, but the Trinity fans faced an anxious seven-minute wait until news filtered through of Salford's home defeat. Vowles, who had failed to score in any of his six previous games for the club, touched down twice in the first half as Trinity opened up a 24-4 interval lead. The former Leeds player got the scoreboard ticking over as early as the fourth minute when he raced onto a pass from Davis and sliced through the Wolves defence. Davis was also heavily involved in the move that brought a try for second row forward Jamie Field. The stand-off then took a return pass from fellow half-back Paul Handforth to touch down himself. When speedy right winger Andrew Frew finished off an intricate passing move for a fourth try, the game looked over.
Warrington pulled a try back on 25 minutes when second rower Darren Burns forced his way over the Trinity line. But Vowles went over for his second try straight from a scrum just before half-time, followed by further tries from winger Kris Tassell and Davis early in the second period. Scrum-half Gary Hulse grabbed a consolation try for the outclassed visitors but Davis created further openings that allowed Vowles to complete his hat-trick. Chris Feather also touched down in Wakefield's 10th-try romp. Wakefield: Holland, Frew, Vowles, Ellis, Tassell, Handforth, Davis, Jackson, March, Feather, Slattery, Field, Knott.
