The specially engraved crystal trophy was awarded to Kelly for steering the Vikings to two wins from four Super League games in March. "I'm obviously pleased with the way things have gone so far," said a delighted Kelly. "But although we've had a good start, our objective has not yet been achieved."
Tipped to struggle this season, Kelly's side immediately served notice of their intention to prove the critics wrong by giving St Helens a massive fright on the opening weekend of the season. They also ran world champions Bradford close as well as chalking up victories at Castleford and against Wakefield. It is a notable achievement, and one which Kelly, who only took charge of Widnes a year ago, must take the bulk of the credit for. That was certainly the view of the three-man judging panel of Ray French, Dave Woods and BBC Sport Online rugby league editor Phil Gordos. "The Vikings have exceeded all expectations - both on and off the pitch - and have more than played their part in getting Super League VII off to a cracking start," said French. Taking on the big boys "It's good to see an English coach succeeding and Kelly deserves recognition for the work he is doing at the Halton Stadium." Woods said: "Everyone was delighted to see Widnes back in the top flight but the hard part was convincing people they deserved to be there. "The win at Castleford as well as the performances against St Helens and Bradford have done that - and Neil Kelly is the man behind it all." Gordos added: "The achievements of Kelly and Widnes will give the Northern Ford Premiership a huge boost. "It is great to see a side winning promotion and then taking on the big boys with such success and enthusiasm." |
