Giants coach lands May award
Huddersfield Giants coach Tony Smith is BBC Sport Online's Rugby League Personality of the Month for May.

The Australian edged out Leeds Rhinos star Kevin Sinfield to the accolade after steering the Northern Ford Premiership club to victory in the inaugural Buddies National League Cup.

The Giants, who were relegated from Super League last season, also maintained their grip on the top of the NFP by recording three league wins - all away from home - against Oldham, Doncaster and Hunslet.

"It's a great honour to win recognition from the BBC," said Smith, who is in his second season as head coach at the McAlpine Stadium.

"We have worked hard to turn things around and it is pleasing to be in the position we are at the moment.

"There is a real buzz about the place and the fans have got a lot to get excited about."

The BBC's Ray French, a member of the judging panel, said Smith fully deserved his award.

"He must take a lot of credit for the way Huddersfield have gone about the job of winning their place back in the top flight," said French.

"They have certainly enriched the NFP with the quality of their rugby and are looking a good bet for an instant return to Super League.

"Their victory in the Buddies National League Cup must have boosted everyone's spirits at the club as well and is just reward for their efforts so far."

Phil Gordos, BBC Sport Online's rugby league editor, added: "Tony Smith must take a huge slice of the credit for the way the Giants have shrugged off last year's relegation.

"It is not easy to engineer a quick recovery from such a setback, but Smith has managed it - and with some style."
