| Wednesday, 13 November, 2002, 19:40 GMT Alou takes over Giants ![]() Alou was sacked by the Montreal Expos in 2001 Dominican Felipe Alou will replace Dusty Baker as manager of National League baseball champions the San Francisco Giants. Alou played for the Giants, who came within six outs of a World Series title earlier this month, between 1958 and 1963 during a 17-year career in the major leagues. The popular Baker is talking to the Chicago Cubs, where Alou's son Moises plays, about taking over as their manager. During his career Alou, who was fired as manager by the Montreal Expos during the 2001 season, hit a .286 average with 206 homers and 852 RBIs.
Alou was bench coach for the Detroit Tigers last season. During his time with the Giants he formed an all-Alou outfield with brothers Manny and Jesus in some games. "I'm thrilled to go back where it all started for me. Many times I never thought I would get back there," said Alou said. Alou was given a warm welcome by Giants general manager Brian Sabean. "We're obviously thrilled we're able to welcome Felipe back," said Sabean. "Everybody in baseball realises what he's done in the game. It's thrilling because he's a Giant at heart. "He's returning to manage a team we're still going to be excited about for years to come. To hire someone of his pedigree is exciting. "He calls himself a baseball soldier in conversation. He's more like baseball royalty to us." |
